freakout #3: the hair again

(Previously: I’m planning on wearing a bun made of fake hair for my Vegas wedding. I ordered it online knowing the color wasn’t quite a match.)

Well, my Easihair Elegance fake hair bun arrived and it’s not, uh, what I was expecting. Instead of the tidy bun in the picture:

I got something that is more like a, well, a poof:

Easihair Elegance bun not quite as I thought

Or maybe a Tribble?

Easihair Elegance bun not quite as I thought

The ends are all loose and flop around. Does the first picture make you think that it would be like that? Me neither. If I wanted to make this a tidy bun I’d have to use a lot of pins, and not having to use a lot of pins was the whole point of buying a fake hair bun. And on top of that the color is not even close as a match, which I knew when I ordered it but I was picturing more red streaks instead of the overall auburn color. I had planned on highlighting my hair to make the bun blend a bit more but now that I don’t like the bun I’m unwilling to also get my hair colored.

Which puts me back at square one. I cannot return the bun (again, knew that when I ordered it) so I’m going to have to exchange it for hair I know will match, I’m color #6. With the store credit I have I could either buy one ponytail thing, and maybe clip it up into an updo-ish thing. Though, these are mounted on claw clips and I’m not sure how much trouble creating an updo would be from one of them:

option #1: one of these

Easihair ponytail options

Or I could get a Fun Bun (it’s just like a hair scrunchie but a bit bigger and fuller) that I know would match my hair really well but is a bit more chaotic than I’d like for wedding hair, and (with the rest of the store credit) a braided dome that I have not seen in person and cannot know how well it might match. I can hope that one or the other works, either would be less trouble than styling the ponytails above:

option #2: both of these

fake hair scrunchie and a braided bun

What do you think, which option should I go for? I only have time for one of those choices to reach me!

(And yes, I realize how silly fussing over fake hair is, and no I’m not terribly upset about it all.)

I think you’ll have the best luck with one of pieces mounted on the claw clips. Is someone going to be doing your hair for the wedding? If so, I’d ask them which would work best. If it were me, I’d skip the fake hair, unless it seemed like it would be easy to just stick the thing on and have it look really nice.

    Dear NM,

Girl, at the local “mawl” where I live in NorCal there are kiosks with fake hair spilling all over the place. I suggest you make a visit to one of these places. I’ve also seen the faux falls at the local Sally Beauty supply stores.

    Good luck!

RH - I’m familiar with those but at this point I don’t want to spend any more money, I have store credit for the options above so I’m going to choose from what they have. I did look at one of the kiosks in a mall originally but they didn’t have any buns so I went ahead and ordered online.

Susan - I’m not going to have a hairdresser for the Vegas trip, but I am going to get a hairdresser for having portraits taken when we get back. And I’m not skipping the fake hair, at least for Vegas, no chance.

I would go for the braided dome thingy, if only because it is called the “delightful bubble” and really, how could you not buy something called the delightful bubble?

Also, I actually think the style is really cool and I might use it for inspiration for my own wedding hair, assuming I have enough by October.

  • Tracy

I’d go for the braided dome. It looks like that would be easy enough to secure with minimal pins over a small messy-ish bun.

  • Susan

Well if you are definitely going for the fake hair and you are doing yourself, then get the one that will be easiest, which I do think will be the braided dome thing. It is most similar to what you had originally wanted too.

  • pam

i also vote for the delightful bubble. mostly because of its name, but also because it looks closest to what you originally wanted.

Go for the braided dome if you’re set on fake hair. If it was me, I would avoid the fake hair. I’ve never seen fake hair that looked good (although if I did, I guess I would never know that it was fake). It seems like there’s a lot of potential for AFV style mishaps for the fake hair wad to be dislodged.

Yeeeeaahhhh…I’m pretty sure all fake bun hair is gonna be like that. I’m not a big one for fake hair at all. I’ve never seen fake hair that looked nice unless it cost an arm and leg and a couple of sacks of gold. I know you have great taste, and you’ll work it all out.

  • Tara

Are you not seeing a stylist for money reasons or for some other reason? I think I would definitely go see a pro or have someone there that’s good with hair to help you with it

  • Bonnie

I’m there with the last few comments in my opinion about fake hair.

  • Megan

Tara - It’s cause we’ll be in Vegas and I don’t so much like strange stylists, I have hair that stylists have been pretty vocal about how much that hate working with it. Good times, good memories.

We’re having official portrait photographs taken after we get back, and on that day I’m going to have my hair and makeup done. For Vegas though, I wanted something easy and since I’m very unskilled in doing my own hair I’m going to go for something that will look good in the blurry video. Does this make sense?

Also, I just liked the way that particular bun that I originally ordered looked. Or, I would have liked the way it looked if it had actually been all tucked up and tidy like it is in the picture.

I would go with option 2, though I have no clue what your real hair looks like so I don’t know if that would change my mind or not :). Anyways. best of luck!
also.. option 2 gives us technically 2 options that might work out so you might have double the odds of finding something that works?

  • Megan

Leah - Exactly. I have consulted a friend who has touched a fun bun and matched the no. 6 color to my own hair and she agrees I should go with Option #2. If both suck I can always grit my teeth and get a hairdresser for Vegas.

Hi! I’m getting married soon too, in May, I love your new blog. I added it to the wedding blogs I am obsessed with :)

I really like the ponytail in the middle, the one that the girl with the terracotta dress is wearing. The reason I’m commenting though, is that the salon near me carries fake buns and things. Maybe check around and see if you can go to some salons and pick something out that you’ve seen in person. I would personally get 2 or 3 different things and bring them with me. It adds up, but it’s your wedding, and if you’re in Vegas with no special hair, that could be bad :) :) :)

Not sure exactly what I’m looking at from the photos, but for what it’s worth, I have an elastic band/scrunchy type thing with fake hair on it, that I’ve worn so much I’ve nicknamed it “Petey”. I just pull my hair back in a pony and use Petey as the elastic on it. Depending on the look you want and how long your hair is, you can either pull your own hair all the way through and let your ends mix in with the fake hair ends, or just pull the pony halfway through the final time, leaving a little bun thingy in the middle, with the Petey ends all around. Mine is an almost exact match to my haircolor and it doesn’t scream “fake”, although on closer look, I’m sure folks realize that’s not all my hair.

If one of your options is a scrunchy type thing, I’d be tempted to go with that, because making a ponytail is MUCH easier than messing with pins and such, especially if your are nervy and not used to putting up your hair.

    Best wishes!!!

definitely option #2. here’s hoping the braided dome looks better than the original bun, and if not, the “sexy messy” option could be cute. no no no to the claw-clip ponytails!

  • Sunshyndrmr

You could always get the delight bubble and have a hairdresser “install” it for you. Then they aren’t having to fuss too much with your natural hair but they could probably do a really nice job putting it on for you.

Whatever you do… if you’re doing it yourself, practice, practice practice…
Sometimes springing for someone to even just put the tribble in will save you so much headache it’ll be worth it.
(said from the girl who originally wanted to do her own wedding makeup…turns out it was cheaper to have her do it in the end…)
