Planning To Elope

how my (fake) wedding hair turned out

One of the most fun parts of planning the wedding was getting to try out various options for boosting my hair. I love period and costume heavy films and really wanted a little bit of fantasy hair. But I have fine hair and there just wasn’t a chance I’d get the big silhouette I wanted without some help. Aaaand, since we were going to Vegas I figured I could get away with some fake hair. (When I say fake here I mean synthetic.)

Here are two hair styles that I though of immediately when I was brainstorming fantasy hair, Sarah from the ballroom scene of Labyrinth and Carrie at Charlotte’s wedding from Sex and the City:

And here (shown for the second time, sorry for repetition) are some wedding hairstyles I saved for inspiration:

I discovered what people had warned me about fake hair, it rarely looks good. I tried a few options and was disappointed by the quality and how difficult it is to match when ordering online. (I tried to buy locally so I could match it first but, ha ha, there isn’t much demand for fake wedding hairpieces out there.)

Then with only two days to go before our flight I stumbled across a 15″ Hairdo extension in a TJ Maxx that had been deeply discounted. This turned out to be a very happy stroke of luck. It was slightly darker than my own hair, and when worn as intended looked silly, the synthetic hair had a very different texture from my own. (Though, when you hold up the hair piece it really does make for a bad comedy beard.) But when I clipped it in and pulled it back it looked, I dare say, nice. When twisted together the fake hair blended well with my own hair. It didn’t look outrageous, thank goodness, it was just dramatic enough to balance out the dress. I had a lot of fun wearing it, enough that I wore it again to dinner the next night:

I like it, I’m so glad it turned out nicely. I’m hoping you’ll still continue this blog, even though the eloping has already occurred!

Thanks Liz! I plan on keeping this blog going for a while at least, I have a lot of links I didn’t get a chance to post yet. That and I still have a reception at the end of the summer.

I’ve been toying with using fake hair. My hair is so short, and I really want big gorgeous hair for the wedding… Your pictures give me hope that maybe I can pull it off without looking completely ridiculous! ;)
